Over 400,000 SEK in prize money for the top runners in Ultravasan, Trailvasan, and Vasastafetten 2023
Saturday, August 19 is the big running day during Vasaloppet's Summer Week 2023. It's a day that attracts both eager elite runners and happy recreational runners to the Vasaloppet Arena between Sälen and Mora. This year, the prize pool for the top runners in Ultravasan 90, Ultravasan 45, Trailvasan 30, and Vasastafetten comes to a total of 401,000 SEK. Of course, all participants who complete a race will receive a medal, and those who complete a race that's 30 km or longer will also receive a specially designed finisher T-shirt. Anyone who wants to run a shorter distance is welcome to participate in the recreational race Trailvasan 10, which takes place that Friday evening.
Every year, Vasaloppet’s surplus goes back to the sports movement. Many sports clubs in Dalarna are also dependent on Vasaloppet’s events. With 401,000 SEK in prize money on August 19, Vasaloppet is hosting one of the running event with the largest total prize pools in all of Sweden.
”Our absolute ambition is to organize events that attract both elite and recreational athletes, nationally and internationally. That is our strength. Handing out prize money, the same amount for men and women, and providing elite athletes with the conditions needed to practice and live their sport is important because it ultimately creates broader interest in sports and athletics. At the same time, all surplus from Vasaloppet goes back into sports and the sports club movement,” says Johan Eriksson, CEO of Vasaloppet.
Since Ultravasan started in 2014, many international ultrarunners have come to Sälen and Mora, but 2022 – the first year after pandemic restrictions were lifted – was the first year that runners representing Swedish clubs won all the different races.
A fun detail is that this year, again, the runners will have their first names on their number bibs.
